Data Classification
Overview
Data Classification in Relyance AI helps operationalize data governance by tracking data flows end-to-end across your organization and making what is tracked and how it is displayed editable and customizable.
With the Data Classification screen, Relyance AI allows you to view and edit the Relyance data classification schema, which includes both personal and non-personal data. This helps organizations leverage Relyanceʼs industry-leading data analysis and mapping capabilities tailored to your organizationʼs data classification schema.
The data classification interface is divided into two main schemas: a Personal Data schema and an “Other Data” schema. Schema is a set of default and custom data categories associated with the customer instance, organized hierarchically. The Personal and Other Data categories appear in different platform areas (such as the “Universal ROPA”, Grid View, etc.) as Relyance discovers these data types across our integrations.
- Personal Data Schema: This refers to the foundational Relyance taxonomy for personal data categories created based on our industry expertise.
- Other Data Schema: This refers to other non-personal data categories that your organization might consider sensitive as part of organizational data governance. In this schema, we have included five standard data classifications by default. Users can change these, add new ones, and create multiple levels of data categories within each, thereby creating an entire hierarchy of stratified data categories to map across all your data flows according to your organizationʼs data classifications.
Dashboard Layout
The Data Classification page presents your data categories in a hierarchical structure, enabling you to effectively manage them at various levels, ranging from a broad perspective to a more detailed and specific approach.
To get to the Data Classification settings:
- From your Home screen click Settings.
- In the Settings navigation menu click Data Classification.
The Data Classification screen has the following four (4) columns:
- Expand/Collapse Arrows: Enables the end user to expand and collapse the data category schemas below.
- Name: The name of the data category that can be customized.
- Special: Indicates that this is considered a special type of data category.
- Default: Indicates that this is a Relyance default data category (cannot be deleted).

Use the arrows beside the data categories to transverse the data classification schema.
The Relyance Data Classification schema is divided into two categories:
- Personal Data is used for common personal data categories.
- Other Data is used to define data categories that could be considered sensitive in the context of your organization.
Header
The header of the Data Classification dashboard has a number of functions that allows you to manage your data categories.

| 1. | Search box: A free-form search of data categories in the data classification screen. |
|---|---|
| 2. | Add: Enables the addition of a new data category. |
| 3. | Delete: Enables deletion of newly created data categories. Base data categories cannot be deleted. |
| 4. | Rescan: This button is used to rescan your existing documents and source code using the latest data category settings. |
The “Rescan” button informs the source code analyzer to rescan all the source-code repositories and rescan all contracts.
Depending on the number and size of your repositories and integrations, this process may take several minutes to hours to complete.
Your organization's data inventory and map will reflect any changes you make to the data classification schema, or the editable Universal ROPA. If your updates arenʼt available after one (1) business day, please contact the Relyance Customer Success team to troubleshoot. | | 5. | Show Special Data Types Only: This allows the end-user to only view data categories marked as special categories. | | 6. | Audit Logs: To view a global audit log of all changes made via this screen. |
Managing your Data Categories
Adding and editing your data categories is an easy process following the steps below.
Steps to add a data category
- (Optional) Select the checkbox beside the desired parent type.
- Click the Add icon in the dashboard header to bring up the Create Data Category dialog.
- In the Create Data Category dialog enter the following information: Classification / Parents: These parent classifications visually represent how data categories are grouped. Include any parent categories here. Name: Provide a meaningful name describing the data type. Keywords: Enter any keywords that should be used when scanning your source code, documents, and integrations. See Keywords for more info.
- Once complete click Create Data Category.

Steps to rename a data category
- Click on the row of the data category you want to rename.
- A slider drawer will open, allowing you to edit the data category. This slider drawer allows you to change the parents, rename the field, and add or remove keywords. The audit log specific to this data category is found at the bottom of the drawer.
- Make the desired changes to the data category.
- Click the Save button to save your changes.

Steps to delete a data category
- Select the data category in question.
- Click the Delete icon to remove the data category.
- Once done a confirmation message will appear. Click OK to confirm.

Default data categories (the ones Relyance has made available in the Personal Data schema) cannot be deleted.
Keywords
You can edit or add the keywords that the Relyance intelligence engine uses in code and documents. Keywords specify how the data categories are represented in your ecosystem for Relyance to scan and analyze.
Some examples:
- Source Code: If the end goal is to configure Relyance to search for “Shipping ID” from the source code scan, enter keywords that specify how the data category is represented in the code. For example, if “Shipping ID” is defined as a variable named “shipping_id” in a file in the code repository Relyance has access to, specify “shipping_id” as the keyword. With this, Relyance will tag any instances of “shipping_id” with “Shipping ID” and display that on the platform.
- Contracts: If the end goal is to configure Relyance to search for a specific data category from Data Processing Agreements (DPAs), enter the keyword in which that data category is represented in your agreements. For example, if you wish for Relyance to scan “Pixel ID” and this is available as a category of personal data outlined in the DPA as “Pixel Identification Data”, enter “Pixel Identification Data”. Relyance will tag any “Pixel Identification Data” instances with “Pixel ID” and display that on the platform.
At this time documents will not be scanned with custom keywords.
Audit Log
The Data Classification screen also includes an audit log that tracks who made what change for transparency.
The audit log can be seen in both the field edit drawer and the full audit log from the main page.

Considerations
- Relyance administrators can add and edit data types in the Personal Data and Other Data schema.
- The “base” categories in the Relyance Personal Data schema cannot be deleted. Any data categories that the user creates can be deleted.
- While end-users can specify multiple levels and create parent/child relationships in the data classification screen, Relyance will always default to displaying the most granular data category in the platform based on what we discover from the integrations.
- Always exercise caution when modifying or adding a new data category. The data categories defined here are used across different areas of the system (such as ROPAs, etc.) and will impact all platform users.
